Gym Show -Off’s Scheduled for March 5th & 26th!!
On
March 5th, 3rd grade is set for their night! While the students in
4th & 5th will have their chance on March 26th! The Gym Show
Off’s are a chance for students and their parents to come play together.
You may just come and watch, or join in the fun with us, if you wish.
Find out what kinds of things your kids are learning in Physical Education
class. The activities include topics which the classroom teachers
and myself have integrated traditional classroom subjects into games
and activities. We still cover many of the skills you remember, but
with a new fun “academic twist.” Some of the
games include bask”stat”ball, scooter math, and planet tag. Stop and
try on a heart monitor for size when you visit one of our shows!
Back to Mr. "G"s Home Page The Pennsylvania Walkers Club has now
tallied 293 miles in our “FITitious” trip across PA. The students
have walked and joggged in class so far and as spring officially arrives
we will also begin walking at recess. The Walkers arrived at several
of the schools that have been our PEpals. We have reached the following
schools: Hazle Elementary in Hazelton, Mountain View in Harrisburg, and
Steelton-Highspire in Steelton (near Hershey Park). The students have done
the calculations of the distances we travel. They have written letters
and submitted projects or items to be sent to the other schools telling
about the local area of Philadelphia and Bucks County. We have even
made a short video to be sent. All students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades
have been working to add our to our miles. Once we have explored
PA, these miles can take us to other places. You can help too since
the students can earn miles by walking at home. They can even earn
BONUS miles if they exercise with a family member.
Back to Mr. "G"s Home Page >Students are reminded to wear sweat pants, warm ups, windpants, or
similar.
Back to Mr. "G"s Home Page > Pennsbury requires students wear sneakers for physical education.
Back to Mr. "G"s Home Page The 1st - 5th grades
have been learning the location of some major bones in the body.
Try playing “Sherlock Bones” and ask your student questions about bones
and where to find them. We have talked about 12 in class this year.
Start at the top with the head and work your way down the skeleton, that
is the way we have learned them in class.
REMINDER: In the event
of sickness or illness, students should bring in a note. If the child
has been to a doctor and will miss more than one class, a copy of the doctor
note

“The
Bone Zone!” & “ Muscle Mania!!”
The 3rd - 5th graders
have also been working on Muscle Mania, learning major leg, arm,
and torso muscle names. During games like Running Rummy, Muscle Match
and our fitness circuit the students have discovered which muscles can
be worked on in particular exercises and stretches. They are beginning
to understand more about how they can positively effect their body through
exercise. We have also discussed the need for exercise. In addition,
we learn the proper terms and methods for using these muscles.
Come to the one of
our Gym Show Offs to see the students in action using their muscles
and the corresponding names.
should be sent. When possible, the note should detail the situation
and when feasible, estimate the return date. A student who becomes
sick and is not under the care of a doctor can bring a note from their
parent/ guardian. A note should also be sent to notify when a student
is able to
return to activity and any limitations.
shopping bags, ”7-Eleven“ type cups, plastic shrub pots, clothespins,
old sheets or pillow cases, colored t-shirts & nylons.
All of these items can be sent to school with your child
at anytime during the school year. Students should leave them
in my office, my mailbox(if possible), or the gymnasium . In this
way, we are able to supplement our program through donated materials.
Heart Smart
using Heart Monitors
number of heart monitors for the students to use, these tools can help
the children to see direct and almost immediate feedback on heart activity.
They are able to observe how the level of activity effects individual
heart rates.
The monitors have
been used in several lessons at the third, fourth and fifth grade level.
All the students in these grades have now had an opportunity to try one
or two styles of the monitors. We are still getting the hang of the
monitors, but the students are doing a great job with them. We hope
to use them a few more times before the end of the school year. We
at Edgewood were the first in our district to begin to use these tools
in the classroom. With
the distict help we can continue to grow in our understanding of our
hearts and bodies.
Special note; any
person or company interested in helping out with a donation toward the
purchase of a monitor, please contact Mr. Gallo. Come try a monitor
on for size at the next Gym Show Off !
